Position Summary:
The CNC Laser Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC laser cutting equipment to produce precision sheet metal components. This position requires hands-on experience with laser systems, a solid understanding of fabrication processes, and a strong focus on quality, safety, and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities:
Laser Operation: Set up, operate, and monitor CNC laser cutting machines to cut and shape sheet metal materials according to production specifications and quality standards.
Blueprint & Program Reading: Interpret blueprints, part drawings, and work orders to determine cutting paths, materials, and dimensions. Load and modify programs as necessary to ensure proper cutting operations.
Material Handling: Load and unload sheet metal safely onto cutting tables, verify material type and thickness, and properly handle finished parts to prevent damage.
Tooling & Machine Setup: Select and install appropriate nozzles, lenses, and cutting gases for the job. Perform test runs and make adjustments to optimize cut quality and minimize scrap.
Quality Control: Inspect finished parts for accuracy, edge quality, and dimensional compliance using calipers, micrometers, and other precision measuring tools. Ensure parts meet required tolerances and surface finish standards.
Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on laser machines, including cleaning lenses, checking alignment, and maintaining assist gas systems. Report mechanical or performance issues promptly to maintenance staff.
Safety & Organization: Follow all company safety guidelines, wear required PPE, and maintain a clean and organized work area. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and safety.
Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, programmers, and other operators to resolve production issues, improve workflows, and maintain consistent quality.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years operating CNC laser cutting equipment in a manufacturing environment.
- Technical Skills: Strong understanding of laser cutting parameters, materials, and tolerances. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and part drawings.
- Measurement Proficiency: Must be able to read calipers and other precision tools, and perform basic math (fractions, addition, multiplication) for accurate part verification.
- Attention to Detail: Commitment to accuracy and consistent quality.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and resolve cutting or programming issues efficiently.
- Safety-Conscious: Proven track record of following safety protocols and maintaining a hazard-free workspace.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with advanced CNC laser systems (fiber or CO₂)
- Familiarity with a variety of sheet metal materials, including steel, aluminum, and stainless steel
- Knowledge of nesting software or CAD/CAM systems
- Certification or training in laser machine operation or sheet metal fabrication
