Position Description:
The Citizenship Coach will be responsible for implementing Wesley’s citizenship program. The Citizenship Coach will help recruit clients through referrals from other Wesley program areas and through relationships with community partners. The Citizenship Coach provides orientation to new clients and direct consultation and case management to clients interested in entering the Citizenship program. The Coach will work closely with the other member of the Adult Literacy team and the Community Service team and will join a variety of team meetings and staff task forces designed to connect staff members, improve the quality of Wesley services and integrate services for the benefit of clients.
Essential Functions:
- Engage in community outreach and recruitment activities to bring potential Citizenship clients to Wesley.
- Conduct information session, orientation and of clients.
- Review Citizenship curricula and modify to fit the needs of Wesley clients.
- Teach Citizenship classes and monitor success.
- Work with Adult Literacy, Financial Opportunity Center, Community Service, and other Wesley teams to recruit clients to Wesley Citizenship classes.
- Provide consultation and case management to clients as needed; ensure warm hand-off to Wesley or other wrap-around support services (food pantry, emergency financial assistance, childcare, transportation, referrals, etc.).
- Develop individualized service plans to assist clients to reach their goals.
- Work with the local USCIS office to conduct targeted outreach to identify and recruit individuals that may be at any point in the naturalization process.
- Work with community-based agencies providing services like English language classes, civics classes, legal clinics, etc. to conduct targeted outreach to identify and recruit individuals that may be at any point in the naturalization process.
- Assist with the naturalization application and collecting supporting documents as needed.
- Stay apprised of relevant immigration law and policy to connect local programmatic, communications and policy efforts with national efforts to increase access to citizenship.
- Regularly provide agency updates for a referral resource guide that contains resources for citizenship information, preparation, and legal assistance services to partners.
- Fulfill reporting requirements as designated by department and funders.
- Track clients progress in database systems; maintain updates on clients’ status.
- Participate actively in a variety of partner meetings, team meetings, and all agency staff meetings and trainings.
- Represent Wesley at community functions as required.
- Support through word and action the Wesley Community Center’s Mission statement and the mission’s core values.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to write and speak clearly and informatively; Bi-lingual in English-Spanish required; Experience with providing assistance with N-400 Naturalization preferred; Experience in the immigration policy field preferred; Strong computer skills including typing and Microsoft Office; Strong customer service orientation; Ability to work cooperatively and support the team’s effort to succeed; Ability to interpret and communicate contractual mandates and guidelines, as well as learn, with a strong attention to detail; Strong organizational and project management skills including planning and scheduling; Understanding of effective adult learning strategies and client support resources.
While in this position, the employee is expected to seek to understand, communicate appropriately and effectively, build a positive, professional rapport with all clients and community partners using active listening and conflict resolution skills. Ability to adhere to deadlines, react to unpredictable events quickly and efficiently, be resourceful, manage conflict and challenges.
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or other related field and/or meets experience criteria; a minimum of (3) years’ work experience working in employment coaching, case management or citizenship related fields.
Work/Physical Requirements: This position requires the employee to work constructively and cooperatively in a team environment. Employee(s) in this position will work primarily in an office setting where they will interact with clients to help resolve issues; while also occasionally having to stand and walk to complete job duties. Must be able to lift and carry up to (25) pounds unassisted. Employee in this position may be required to work weekends in support of program services and special events.
