As a Facilities Intern, you will support the daily operations, maintenance activities, and improvement projects within Hunter Engineering’s facilities. This role is ideal for students studying engineering, facilities management, construction management, industrial technology, or related fields. The intern will gain hands-on experience in preventive maintenance, facility documentation, safety compliance, GIS/equipment mapping, and project coordination while contributing meaningful work that improves facility efficiency and workplace safety.
What You’ll Do:
Facilities Operations & Maintenance
- Assist with preventive maintenance (PM) scheduling, tracking, and documentation.
- Help organize and update equipment records, service logs, and maintenance checklists.
- Assist technicians with projects, moving items, troubleshooting, and supporting daily tasks.
- Organize and clean work areas, storage rooms, and facility zones to maintain efficiency and safety.
- Study and learn to analyze maintenance data to identify recurring issues or opportunities for improvement.
Documentation, Mapping & Asset Management
- Update facility maps, layouts, and equipment inventories.
- Create or revise documentation such as SOPs, emergency maps, and equipment photo libraries.
- Support data entry and recordkeeping within the CMMS system.
- Irrigation Mapping: Use GPS/GIS tools to remap irrigation head locations, zones, and mainlines to create accurate "as-built" documentation.
- Tree Inventory: Identify, locate, and map tree species across the property, flagging dead or hazardous trees for removal.
- Digital Archiving: Operate wide-format scanners to convert physical blueprints and site plans into high-quality digital formats.
Safety & Compliance
- Assist technicians with monthly safety inspections to learn the requirements for: (fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, exit routes, emergency lighting, etc.).
Project Support
- Assist with small- to medium-scale facility projects, including space planning, office moves, layout improvements, and vendor coordination.
- Learn to gather quotes, schedule service visits, and support project timelines.
- Help track progress and communicate updates to the Facilities Manager.
Inventory & Supplies
- Support tracking and organization of MRO supplies, filters, bulbs, tools, and consumables.
- Learn to reorder or restock common facility items.
Energy & Sustainability
- Conduct lighting, HVAC, or equipment audits to support energy-saving initiatives.
- Assist with recycling and waste-stream improvement projects.
Data Management & Reporting
- Help develop reports and dashboards for key performance metrics (PM completion, work order trends, utility usage, etc.).
- FMX Data Integration: Input collected field data and digitized blueprint information into the FMX platform to establish preventive maintenance schedules and asset logs.
- Data Verification: Cross-check new digital records against legacy files to ensure 100% accuracy in the facility database.
- Additional duties as assigned
What You’ll Bring:
- Currently enrolled in an Engineering, Facilities Management, Industrial Technology, Construction Management, Safety Manager, Natural Resources, GIS, or related degree program.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic mechanical or technical aptitude is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Teams).
- Familiarity with GIS tools or AutoCAD is helpful but not required.
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and navigate warehouse/plant environments.
