Materials & Quality Engineer

We currently have an opening for a leader of our Quality, Metallurgy & Continuous Improvement (QMCI) department at our Cullman, Alabama facility. This "hands-on leader" would assist with project launches and give technical guidance to our customers for customized heat-treated parts. Our primary services are ion/gas nitriding and induction hardening, surface hardening processes. The Materials & Quality Specialist is responsible for assisting the Cullman, Alabama plant in implementing the quality system and metallurgical processes following corporate policies, goals and objectives and the requirements of IATF16949 and ISO9001.

Qualifications / Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in quality/metallurgy in a manufacturing environment, engineering, or equivalent technical field
  • Capable of identifying solutions to complex problems
  • A self-starter who can drive actions to completion
  • Strong organizational/communication skills and the ability to work in a dynamic environment
  • Able to multitask, meet deadlines and support all supplier quality field activities

Preferred Qualifications / Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Material Science or a Technical related field
  • Past experience in a supplier-facing role or equivalent experience communicating with customers
  • Knowledge of heat treat of alloy steels, including case hardening by nitride or carburization including engineering drawing requirements

Here is a snapshot of the responsibilities of this position:

  • Assist with customer audits and facility compliance with the Quality Management System, policies, practices, procedures and work rules to support and maintain an IATF 16949-compliant quality management system
  • Lead facility heat treat and materials activities. Create heat treat processes and routers to process customer product
  • Act as a customer liaison and promote continuous improvement (CI) by coordinating and/or participating in meetings with customers, leading plant and corporate CI
  • Coordinate major project launches and product development initiatives
  • Communicate to customer on technical issues, questions, or feedback regarding specifications, advice on heat treat needed, or contract review questions
  • Learn the ion and gas nitride processes and support the facility to meet customer requirements
  • Learn and be able to use the Metallurgical Lab equipment to evaluate hardness, case depth, and other material properties of heat treated materials
  • Interface with Corporate Quality, Metallurgy, Sales, and Operations teams to ensure manufacturing processes meet customer standards and our QMS system
  • Oversee internal processing of products from a quality perspective
  • Handles internal and supplier related quality concerns activities to ensure timely administration of activities and records; communicate with customers to work through problems and resolve issues
  • Utilize appropriate quality tools (Lean and 6-Sigma)
  • Drive plant quality metrics with corporate oversight
  • Assist with onsite customer audits
