Job Title: Production Lead

FLSA Status: Non Exempt

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Production Supervisor is responsible for leading a team of associates within a specific manufacturing department. Assists in communicating company goals, safety practices, and deadlines to the team. Motivates and coaches team members and assists in day to day tasks for the department. Looks to help their department(s) grow as needed. This role is supported by a Production Lead.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Customer quality: Ensures that the targeted product quality levels are achieved through use of standardized work and training to those standards, training in operation and quality assurance techniques, and addressing the “vital few” issues surfaced by first pass yield trend and pareto analyses.
  • Customer communication: Within an hour, responds to customer service and production planning requests for work order status
  • Customer on-time-delivery: Collaborates with production planning, customer service, and plant management to create doable schedules that satisfy customers/ 98% on-time-delivery. Identify and implement actions to continuously improve department on-time-delivery
  • Safety: Leads/models a safe work environment. Actively promotes a safe work environment as well as meets safety requirements complying with all policies or regulations set forth by NSA, OSHA, and various government agencies concerning safety
  • Financial: Tracks Key Performance Indicators, anticipating and correcting trends which would compromise achievement of financial targets
  • People: Builds people capability through effective hiring, training, communication, feedback, and recognition with hourly associates
  • Results: Compare actual results vs standard based target results using real time visual displays to drive associate led in-the-moment problem solving – by far, the most impactful form of Continuous Improvement
  • Operations: Creates a continuous improvement culture within their area of responsibility. Effectively engages their team with Lean manufacturing concepts and collaboratively applies them to production operations to continuously
  • Develop and adhere to supervisor leader standard work
  • Leads by example with a positive, engaging approach
  • Be highly visible to our associates and promote hands-on, high involvement approaches to problem solving.
  • Champion change and drive a continuous improvement culture by involving our associates in problem solving and decision making as well as recognizing our associates for exceptional work.
  • Create and maintain a respectful work environment by listening, seeking facts to support decisions, managing one's own reactions, and addressing unacceptable behavior
  • Screen, interview and hire candidates. Actively coaches, develops, and recognizes people’s growth. Administers disciplinary actions and recommends performance improvement actions in collaboration with the HR Manager.
  • Plans & implements training of multiple skills for the team members.
  • Capable of effectively communicating information to top management, peers, cross-functional team members, and their associates.
  • Create the basis for continuous improvement and employee empowerment by ensuring that standardized work and processes are followed, needed adjustments are documented and implemented and the area is compliant with safety and 5S requirements.
  • Continuously improve manufacturing and materials processes using Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma tools. Ensure full employee involvement in these plan-do-check-act improvement systems. Actively engage our Engineering and Continuous Improvement Departments in your improvement efforts.
  • Provide training and coaching to improve standard work, work center organization (5S), and housekeeping
  • Monitor/update/approve standard work for department/cell team leads and audit adherence to standard work for production associates.
  • Maintain equipment uptime and process capability at 98+% by effectively coordinating maintenance and repair services
  • Assure alignment with facility ISO and/or TS standards and all HSE guidelines
  • Assure all production records are accurate and completed in a timely manner
  • Schedule overtime and approve vacation requests aligned with production needs

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum 5 years in manufacturing setting
  • 2+ years in manufacturing floor level leadership
  • Experienced in Lean/Sigma principals
  • Previous experience in Metal Fabrication preferred
  • The most impactful layer of plant leadership – they work directly with our people manufacturing products, so their leadership is critical to the business’s success
  • In that light, they need to spend ~80% of their time on the floor. Management must minimize the impediments hindering them from being able to do so.
  • How they conduct themselves – their positivity, energy, focus areas, and leadership framework – has tremendous influence on how their people approach their jobs. Plant management has a key responsibility to develop and coach Supervisor Leader Standardized Work that’s cascaded from the Plant Manager’s job description.
