Your new role:

The Chief Engineer occupies a pivotal role, overseeing the entire engineering department on board our vessel. This position is essential for maintaining the operational efficiency, safety, and compliance of the ship's machinery and systems. The Chief Engineer collaborates closely with the captain and other senior crew members to ensure that the vessel is mechanically sound and operates within the stipulations of maritime law and environmental regulations.

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the management and supervision of the engine room staff and oversees the maintenance, operation, and repair of all electrical, mechanical, and structural systems onboard the ship.

Key responsibilities include:

Ensuring the safe and efficient operation of all engineering systems.

Managing and training engine room personnel.

Implementing and monitoring maintenance and repair schedules for all machinery.

Conduct regular inspections to ensure the ship meets international safety and environmental standards.

Coordinating with the Captain and shore-based management to report on system status, ongoing issues, and equipment malfunctions.

Overseeing the proper documentation and recording of engineering operations as per maritime law.

Managing the budget for the engineering department, including procurement of supplies and parts.

Responding effectively to emergencies by making key decisions to rectify issues and prevent harm.

Key Tasks and Duties:

The day-to-day tasks of the Chief Engineer involve a hands-on approach while also incorporating strategic planning and team management. These tasks include:

Monitoring the operation of all equipment and systems.

Updating systems and procedures to increase efficiency and safety onboard.

Maintaining detailed records of operations, maintenance, and repairs.

Implementing energy-saving measures to optimize fuel consumption.

Supervising the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.

Ensuring compliance with maritime safety and pollution laws.

Qualifications and requirements:

The minimum qualifications and experience required for the Chief Engineer are:

A valid Chief Engineers Unlimited Tonnage license.

Possess all valid flag state (and coastal state as applicable) credentials required by law for service as Chief Engineer on the route and class of vessel appointed to (examples: Merchant Mariners Credential, TWIC Card, Medical Certificate, etc.).

STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers).

A valid Passport

For less than an unlimited license, you will need a valid DD 4000 certificate from a recognized issuing authority.

Ability to read and write English, as well as render, understand, and react to commands given in English.

Minimum two years experience on DP-2 class vessels of similar size, route and industrial mission in a position not lower than Assistant Engineer. Six months as Chief Engineer is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The chief engineer must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation. The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required.

Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
