Job Description: Pilot Plant Instrumentation Technician

Position Summary

The primary role of the Pilot Plant Instrumentation Technician is to install, test, repair, maintain, and inventory pilot plant instrumentation and equipment. This position supports both equipment reliability and pilot plant operations, ensuring all devices are properly calibrated, documented, and functioning safely and efficiently. A secondary responsibility includes assisting with the construction and operation of pilot plants and supporting electrical, mechanical, and control system tasks.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Instrumentation & Equipment Responsibilities

  • Install, test, repair, and maintain pilot plant instrumentation such as:
  • Pressure transducers
  • Thermocouples
  • Scales
  • Flow controllers
  • Other related measurement devices
  • Install, maintain, and repair mechanical and electrical equipment including pumps, motors, and heaters.
  • Maintain accurate calibration records for all instrumentation.
  • Ensure all equipment and instrumentation items are properly inventoried.

Electrical, Controls & Documentation

  • Assist with wiring, wire diagrams, control system setup, and troubleshooting.
  • Support control software setup and configuration.
  • Contribute to the development and interpretation of technical drawings.

Pilot Plant Construction & Operation

  • Assist with construction of pilot plant systems using pipe, tubing, AC/DC powered equipment, and related components.
  • Support ongoing pilot plant operations as needed.
  • Perform mechanical, cutting, wiring, and installation tasks related to pilot plant builds.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

Technical Experience

  • Hands-on experience with mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Required experience with refinery or plant instrumentation and AC/DC power systems.
  • Experience in pilot plant or demonstration-scale operations preferred.
  • Knowledge of chemical processes or experience with chemicals is a plus.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Ability to read, understand, and work from wiring diagrams and technical drawings.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic pilot plant environment.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to work a 24/7 shift schedule as needed.
  • Must have a valid MVR (Motor Vehicle Record).
  • Steel-toed safety shoes are required.
  • Dress code: Collared shirt and jeans.
  • Standard schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, with flexibility for shift work as required.
