Job Title: COORDINATOR OF ENGINEERING PROJECTS

Department: Drainage

Reports To: City Engineer

Directs Work Of: General Laborers I; Skilled Laborers; Crew Leader

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Effective Date(s): 2017; PG 1/1/2019

Normal Work Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Normal Work Days: Monday through Friday



Education/Experience

Associates degree in engineering, construction or closely related field and a minimum of three years related construction and/or construction project management experience. Prior supervisory experience preferred. Equivalent education, training, experience, skills, and knowledge may be considered.

Summary: Plans and directs drainage repair and installation projects for the Citys catch basins. Supervises drainage work crews. Ensures all equipment and materials are available for successful completion of assigned projects and ensures safe working conditions for all employees and the public.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Works alongside work crews to ensure drainage work projects are completed correctly and on time.

Plans and schedules drainage repair and installation work. Reads and interprets construction blueprints, shoots elevations, assigns work crews; orders and purchase adequate materials and equipment to complete work.

Maintain the efficient and safe operation, care and appearance of all assigned equipment and vehicles. Ensure public and employee safety by adopting and enforcing safe work habits. Investigate damage, accidents, or delays at construction sites, to ensure that proper procedures are being carried out.

Provides information and responds to inquiries from contractors, property owners, staff, and the general public regarding assigned projects. Handles customer complaints personally, or if necessary, refers complainant to City Engineer or appropriate City employee/department. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers, city and regulatory officials, and the general public.

Maintains a variety of logs, files and records related to employees, work assignments and project activities; compiles information and prepares project status reports as required.

Supervises, evaluates, trains and assigns the work of work crews. Motivates employees to perform to the best of their abilities, evaluates employee job performance and initiates recognition and disciplinary procedures where appropriate. Reviews and provides approval of all personnel hire and termination actions. Provides opportunities for and encourages staff development and cooperative management practices. Foster employee empowerment in the delivery of services. Foster a cooperative team environment within the Department and with other City employees in the course of daily activities.

Education and/or Experience

Associates degree in engineering, construction or closely related field and a minimum of three years related construction and/or construction project management experience. Prior supervisory experience preferred. Working knowledge of applicable laws, standards and regulations relating to drainage construction, inspection, safety, and traffic control. Equivalent education, training, experience, skills, and knowledge may be considered.

This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty and follow-up testing.



Language Skills

Considerable skill in reading and interpreting construction drawings, plans and specifications, and contract documents. Ability to effectively communicate complex technical information, orally and in writing, in a professional manner to contractors, developers, property owners, employees, consultants, other governmental agency representatives, City officials and the general public.



Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.



Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.



Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have thorough knowledge of Contact Management systems; databases, Internet search software, Excel, and Word Processing software.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Maintain valid drivers license with acceptable driving record.



Tools and equipment used

Operate equipment: Calculator, phone, fax and copy machine, computer (desk top and lap top and motor vehicle. Experience in operating tape measure, pipe locator, pressure gauges, testing equipment, engineering calculator, phone, and mobile or portable radio.
