The senior designer positions require the evaluation, selection, and ability to apply standard engineering design techniques and exercise of judgment in the performance of the project objectives. The senior designer must optimize solutions through analysis of varied alternatives. The positions require working with a variety of industries, clients, and technical issues. The senior designer will be expected to work on multiple projects at one time. Assignments will have clear and specified objectives, but will require the investigation of some variables to provide the customer with a design that will meet stated objectives. The senior designer is required to track budgets for assigned tasks on each project to prevent the project from exceeding its budget. The incumbent is also required to meet design milestones agreed to during in the project. The senior designer will sometimes meet with customers to discuss engineering related questions and project timing. Documentation of each phase of the project is required for internal use and transmittal to the customer. Technical competence is necessary for the incumbent to apply current industry accepted technology to meet the project objectives. The senior designer is required to review the details of each completed task to ensure that his/her work and the work completed under their direction is error free.

Requirements

Primary Job Responsibilities

The senior designer is responsible for aiding the successful delivery of the discipline deliverables, quality, and administrative portions of the project. The following summary details the responsibilities:

  • Scope - The senior designer is responsible for the design portion of all scope documents. In many cases the senior designer will aid in the development of the scope documents although these may be led by others. The senior designer is responsible for using the correct documents (from the ITAC network) and assuring that these documents meet their intended purpose. Scope documents include: Scope of Work – defines project deliverables and schedules (the “what”) Discipline Narrative/Execution Plan – defines the details of the discipline design (the “how”) Specification –details equipment requirements or programming effort (when applicable to your discipline) The purpose of these scope documents is to communicate the project objectives to the client, project manager, and design team. These documents must have enough detail to allow the design team to proceed in the absence of the lead engineer. These documents must specify the deliverables and schedule.
  • Schedule – The senior designer is responsible for following the project schedule as defined in the scope documents (the “when”).
  • Budget – The senior designer is responsible for reviewing and agreeing to budgets allotted for assigned tasks, tracking their hours and those working under their direction for those tasks, and sometimes aiding the lead/responsible engineer in tracking and maintaining of the project discipline budgets as defined in the proposal and project estimate.
  • Quality – The senior designer is responsible for the quality of work and deliverables assigned to them. The senior designer is responsible for scheduling quality control check of their deliverables and those working for them.

The senior designer is responsible for aiding in the implementation of the Project Execution Plan, communicating areas of risk and delays to the lead/responsible engineer, and aiding in the development of the Project Execution Plan. At all times during the execution of the project, the senior designer is responsible for aiding in the maintenance of the scope documents, schedule, budget, and quality. The senior designer is responsible for following the project execution plan; this includes updating the lead engineer and/or project manager on the status of upcoming items in the execution plan. Throughout the execution of the project the senior designer is responsible for reconciling all scope, schedule, and budget issues for their tasks by maintaining the proper project documentation (e.g., CRA, telephone confirmations, meeting minutes, needs lists). All conversations and issues involving the scope, schedule, and budget are to be discussed with the lead/responsible engineer and the project manager and then documented. The senior designer must assure that the proper information is available for their assigned tasks such that the project can proceed efficiently (on schedule and on budget).

Physical Requirements:

The following are the general physical requirements, physical activities, visual acuity and working conditions that represent essential functions necessary for ITAC Engineering staff positions.

General physical requirements that best describe the work requirements of the position.

  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Physical Activities: The following physical activities apply to the essential functions of the position.

  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Must be able to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on walking working surfaces.
  • Standing: For sustained periods of time.

  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
  • Stooping: Bending downward and forward by the bending spine at the waist.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on a knee or knees.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force to move objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to position.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

Visual Acuity: The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as:

  • Reading drawings
  • Preparing and analyzing data and figures
  • Viewing a computer screen
  • Using measurement devices
  • Examination of fabricated parts at distances close to the eyes. Working Conditions: The worker is subject to the following environmental conditions:
  • Activities occur inside and or outside.
  • Temperatures below 32 degrees or above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour.
  • Noise - noise above the ambient noise level.
  • Work Site Hazards - Proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and elevated work areas, etc.
  • The worker may be required to wear a respirator.
  • The worker may be subjected to tight or enclosed spaces

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical design required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineering license preferred.
  • 3D CAD experience in Plant 3D
  • Laser scanning, working with point clouds
  • Formulating Navisworks models from baseline point clouds
  • Cutting plan and elevations drawing from the 3D model.
  • Pulling Piping MTO’s from the 3D model.
  • Working with vendor STEP files and incorporation into 3D models.
  • Input pipe specs into Plant 3D
  • AutoCad 2D experience
  • Experience formulating General Arrangement and Piping drawings (both orthographic and Isometric).
  • Knowledge of MEP would be a plus.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.).
  • Deep understanding of mechanical design standards and codes.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Familiarity with project management principles.
  • Willingness to visit job sites and assist in hands-on evaluations.
