Position Overview

The Medication Assistant (MA) acts as a caregiver, delivering resident-focused nursing care and daily living support to assigned individuals under the guidance of a charge nurse. This role requires knowledge of age-appropriate care tailored to the physical and emotional needs of residents, as outlined in their care plans.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with essential health care tasks, including daily living activities such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, and undressing.
  • Measure and document vital signs, while offering psycho-social support and personal care to residents.
  • Help residents with transferring, repositioning, and walking, utilizing proper techniques and equipment.
  • Facilitate range of motion and passive exercises.
  • Engage in food preparation and dining activities, ensuring a positive dining experience for residents.
  • Support residents during meals and snacks, providing water and nutritional supplements as needed.
  • Document care outcomes, medication administration, behavioral changes, activities, and dietary needs.
  • Communicate any changes in resident conditions, medication follow-ups, and care concerns to the charge nurse.
  • Assist with housekeeping and laundry to maintain clean and functional living spaces.
  • Support wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident participation.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred, but not mandatory.
  • Minimum age of 18 preferred.
  • Previous clinical or nursing assistant experience in long-term care is advantageous.
  • Must complete annual department-specific competency testing and maintain continuing education credits.
  • A valid driver's license and auto insurance may be required, depending on the role.

Certification Requirements by State

  • Iowa: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification required, maintained with the State Board of Nursing. Completion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course is necessary after obtaining CNA certification.
  • Minnesota: Nursing assistant certification required, completion of a 75-hour course, and registration with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. Successful completion of a state-approved Trained Medication Assistant course is also required.
  • North Dakota: CNA certification required, maintained with the State Board of Nursing. Completion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course is necessary after obtaining CNA certification. Medication Assistant I certification is required for Assisted Living or Basic Care facilities, while Medication Assistant II certification is needed for skilled nursing facilities.
  • South Dakota: Successful completion of the state-approved Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course is required, with certification maintained with the State Board of Nursing.
  • For all facilities: State-required certified/trained medication aide certification (CMA or TMA) is necessary. Active certified nursing assistant registration in the state of practice, or the ability to obtain it within 120 days, is required.
